Church prayer and death
Near Piazza Saffi is the Church of Santa Maria prayer or (Church of death) which it is one of the oldest churches in Civitavecchia located in the historic center near the port and seat of the Brotherhood of Death.
This property was built in 1685 but previously established by the second half of the sixteenth century, to lead to the burial of the bodies found on the shore of the sea or outside the city walls.
The brotherhood that exists today more focused on devotion and religiosity, He had been previously deprived of its activities because of the provisions in force in the Napoleonic 1810 on religious congregations.
This little church is worth visiting for its architectural beauty; It presents a construction of a Greek cross with a structure typical of the Baroque churches of the second half of the seventeenth century.
If you look up at the entrance of the church, you can admire the organ having obtained protection from the stern of the flagship of the Papal States.
This boat was used during the battle of Lepanto.
Inside the church of death we can observe the magnificent dome painted in fresco by Giuseppe Errante, The Baroque bell tower and the two wooden statues of “Jesus Crucified” e “Risen Jesus”.
The property was completely restored in 1702 and it has not been damaged during the bombing of World War II.
